Star Cars — Year 2020!
By Rob McLellan

Ever since I became serious about collecting auto literature in the 1950s I have dreamed of picking the "right" cars — those with beautiful bodies, outstanding performance, excellent handling, high quality and the potential to be collectible. I have always had "Top 10" lists — one for antiques and one for new sports cars. Then, in the early 1970s, I began to collect and restore my dream machines. Some on the lists I have owned and some will never be affordable. Acquiring them before they gain the attention of other collectors is the key and, fortunately, I have owned some that I could not afford now. I enjoyed them and then sold them for a nice (and occasionally outrageous) profit.

Where will the old car hobby be in 2020? In the 1980s Duesenbergs, Rolls-Royce Silver Ghosts, Bugattis and early sports cars like 1950s Ferraris and Aston Martins were examples of big money collector cars. Now, 20 years later, muscle cars of the late 1960s and early 1970s are more in vogue. The prices of Boss 429 Mustangs, 440-6 pack 'Cudas and Yenko Camaros are just a few of the auction circuit headliners. But these cars are the exceptions. Still they are the trend setters for most enthusiasts and investors.

The Future - 2020: Well, here we are, puttering around in traffic on a Sunday afternoon, surrounded by hydrogen fueled monster SUVs, pickup trucks, luxury sedans and the occasional high performance sports car. Thankfully, those mini-hybrids have all disappeared and the antiques of the 1970s-1990s are once again on the road. $30 per gallon gasoline is now history. Going to hydrogen created a cheap surplus of gasoline and the old car hobby is going crazy. Everyone wants a "classic" and seem willing to pay the price. Look — a DeLorean... a Myers Manx dune buggy... a Zimmer... a — wait, is that a 1987 Buick Grand National? Yes, it is! Those go for millions at auctions. WOW! — a 1977 Dodge Warlock Pickup Truck, followed by a Lamborghini Diablo. That old Porsche Turbo actually fits in with all those 1970s kit cars that are so popular. Yes, the old car hobby is very much alive and well and going stronger than ever.

:: COLLECTOR THINK TANK — READER PARTICIPATION INVITED ::

What cars will be the stars of the auctions in 14 years? I can make predictions, but so can most informed enthusiasts. You are reading this so you are one of those informed people. What excited you in the past is the key to your future. Think about that. It is also the key to a fortune. Those cars will rise in value. Get ready for the future now by doing the necessary research today. Literature is the source most collectors use to determine the year, make, model, options, trim selections, colors, etc., that they are looking for. Armed with that information you determine originality and the most desirable set up.
