Last month McLellan's Automotive
History offered a large selection of literature
on the Mazda Miata MX-5 Roadster. Almost immediately
we began to receive phone calls and requests from
clubs and individuals... a California Club was
holding a meet and wanted 50 copies of our listing...
a Mazda enthusiast in our hometown was amazed
to find that literature on his car still existed.
The latter drove his bright red Miata to our office
and we discussed the virtues of the Miata in depth.
It's a great car. As Rob says, "You can have
a lot of fun without exceeding the speed limit.
It makes the right sounds!" According to
Wikipedia Encyclopedia, "The Miata is the
world's best-selling sports car, with 720,407
cars produced and sold between February 1989 and
March 31, 2005."
Historically, Mazda recognized that an inexpensive
sports car similar to the sports cars of the 1950s
and 1960s could be very popular. The introduction
of the Miata in the summer of 1989 was a brilliant
move. It was an overnight success and numerous
articles have been written on the subject. What
followed were Special Editions that could set
a collector's heart to racing.
