From the birth of the Mustang as a 1964 1/2 model, to its golden age which ended with the high performance models in 1973, Mustang was "The Pony Car". Camaro, Firebird, Barracuda and AMX were overnight rivals that had not even been dreamed up when Mustang entered the market.

To deal with the Arab oil embargo in the Fall of 1973, Ford panicked and produced the gasoline thrifty Mustang II and called it the "right car at the right time". Sales exceeded the original Mustang as a new type of buyer emerged, but Mustang enthusiasts were not pleased. Ford created a new ad campaign, "Mustang II. Boredom Zero" and exciting styling exercises such as the Mach I and Cobra II. Real enthusiasts were not impressed with special paint and trim, but sales were good.

In 1979 Mustang's "The New Breed" initially was a compromise of the old and new Mustang, but it offered a 140 horsepower engine. From that point to the present, Mustang has evolved into a better car each year.
