The Best Increase in Value the Most

The statement in the title should be obvious, but most collectors of cars and literature concentrate on quantity and not quality. That is natural when you are just beginning collecting, but old habits should be broken once we become serious collectors. And if you are reading this you probably are.

If you have a nice collection of hundreds or thousands of brochures, books, magazines, memorabilia, dealers albums, etc., your collection increases significantly in value each year assuming you keep them in good condition and they are popular items that many collectors would like to own. You can sell them for a profit, but you have a lot to sell and to catalog. Researching prices and putting them on eBay is going to cost you a lot of time and money.

On the other hand, if you collected very selectively only the literature that you know is very desirable and that there is high demand for, you will get a higher percentage of profit for each item, spend less time describing the literature, pricing and selling them. Most important, they will all sell - and quickly.

I am not suggesting that you should buy just to sell as an investment. That is for stocks, bonds and real estate. Literature is to be enjoyed when you buy it, enjoyed for the long term and then sold when the appropriate time comes - with an impressive profit and with little effort on your part. So, while you will probably want to continue buying literature at a wide range of prices, keep this valuable lesson in mind and at least acquire some real gems. You will be handsomely rewarded in the long run.
